How long does the owner have to complete repairs?
Leak repair requirements · EPA 608 Type III. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Allowable annual leak rates for low-pressure appliances.
The question
Fixing the leaks on an R-11 process chiller will require shutting down the industrial process it serves. How long does the owner have to complete repairs?
- 30 days
- 60 days
- 120 daysCorrect answer
- One year
Why “120 days” is correct
When an industrial process shutdown is needed to make the repair, 40 CFR 82.157(d) substitutes 120 days for the usual 30-day repair period. The same 120-day window applies to the initial verification test.

Why the other answers are wrong
- 30 days — 30 days is the normal deadline when no process shutdown is needed.
- 60 days — 60 days is not a repair period in the rule.
- One year — One year is the time to carry out a retrofit or retirement plan, not to repair leaks.
