How long does the owner have to repair the leaks?

Leak repair requirements · EPA 608 Type III. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Allowable annual leak rates for low-pressure appliances.

The question

A technician adds refrigerant to a 600-pound R-123 comfort cooling chiller and the calculation shows it is over its leak rate. No process shutdown is involved. How long does the owner have to repair the leaks?

  • 14 days
  • 30 daysCorrect answer
  • 90 days
  • 120 days

Why “30 days” is correct

40 CFR 82.157(d) gives owners 30 days from when refrigerant is added to an appliance exceeding its leak rate to identify and repair the leaks. The longer 120-day period applies only when an industrial process shutdown is required.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • 14 days — 14 days is shorter than the rule requires.
  • 90 days — 90 days is not the repair deadline in the rule.
  • 120 days — 120 days applies only when an industrial process shutdown is needed.
