Practice by section
Questions are grouped by the topics on EPA's own test outline, with the answer, the reason and the rule after every one.
EPA 608 Core practice test
Ozone depletion, the Clean Air Act, Section 608 rules, the three Rs, recovery basics, safety and shipping. Every 608 test includes 25 Core questions.
EPA 608 Type 1 practice test
Small appliances: factory-sealed with 5 pounds of refrigerant or less, like refrigerators, window units and dehumidifiers.
EPA 608 Type 2 practice test
Medium-, high- and very high-pressure appliances such as residential split systems, rooftop units and supermarket refrigeration.
EPA 608 Type 3 practice test
Low-pressure appliances, mainly centrifugal chillers using refrigerants like R-123 and R-11.
Mock exams
Fresh questions that are not on the practice pages, 25 per section like the real test, scored section by section.
Universal practice test
A full 100-question mock of the Universal exam: 25 Core, 25 Type I, 25 Type II and 25 Type III questions, scored section by section.
Type I mock exam
Core plus Type I, 50 questions: the test you take for Type I certification.
Type II mock exam
Core plus Type II, 50 questions: the test you take for Type II certification.
Type III mock exam
Core plus Type III, 50 questions: the test you take for Type III certification.
How the EPA 608 exam works
Anyone who maintains, services, repairs or disposes of equipment that could release refrigerant into the air needs Section 608 certification. The test is given by EPA-approved certifying organizations, not by EPA itself, and the certificate never expires.
Every test has 25 Core questions plus 25 for each Type you take. You need 70% in each section to pass it, so 18 of 25. Pass Core and all three Types and you are Universal certified. See how to get EPA 608 certified.
| Section | What it covers | Questions | To pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | Ozone depletion, the Clean Air Act, Section 608 rules, recovery basics, safety, shipping | 25, on every test | 70% (18 of 25) |
| Type I | Small appliances: factory-sealed with 5 lb of refrigerant or less | 25 | 70%; 84% on a mail-in Type I test |
| Type II | Medium-, high- and very high-pressure appliances, except small appliances and motor vehicle AC | 25 | 70% (18 of 25) |
| Type III | Low-pressure appliances, such as centrifugal chillers | 25 | 70% (18 of 25) |
| Universal | Core plus Types I, II and III | 100 | 70% in each section |

- EPA 608 Study Guide: Core, Type I, Type II and Type IIIEPA does not publish a study guide for the Section 608 exam. It publishes a list of test topics. This guide works through that list section by section, explains what each topic is about, and gives the numbers from the regulation you need to know.
- Is the EPA 608 Type I Test Open Book? You will see 'open book' EPA 608 tests advertised, usually for Type I. The regulation does allow a mail-in, unproctored Type I format, but it comes with a higher pass mark and one big limit: it can never count toward Universal certification. Here is what the rules actually say.
- How to Get EPA 608 CertifiedEPA Section 608 certification is the federal credential you need to work on the refrigerant circuit of stationary air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Here is who needs it, how the tests work, how to pick a certification type, where and how to test, including online, and what happens after you pass.
- EPA Leak Repair Rules: Part 82 and Part 84Two federal rules now set leak repair requirements for stationary equipment. 40 CFR 82.157 covers appliances with 50 pounds or more of an ozone-depleting refrigerant. Since January 1, 2026, 40 CFR Part 84 Subpart C sets similar rules for HFC and other high-GWP systems with 15 pounds or more. Here is what each requires and what it means for the 608 exam.
- Pressure-Temperature Chart Basics for RefrigerantsA pressure-temperature (P-T) chart is one of the most useful tools in the trade, and the 608 test expects you to use one. This guide explains what the chart shows, how to read it, and what it tells you about the refrigerant in a system, from noncondensables to superheat to why low-pressure chillers run in a vacuum.
- EPA Refrigerant Recovery RulesMost of what Section 608 asks of technicians comes down to one idea: get the refrigerant out and into a container instead of the air. This guide covers the venting prohibition, the required evacuation levels, small-appliance recovery, recovery equipment rules, the three Rs, safe disposal and the sales restriction, with the regulation cited for each.
- Refrigerant Types: CFC, HCFC, HFC, HFO and Natural RefrigerantsThe Section 608 exam expects you to know which family a refrigerant belongs to, what that means for the ozone layer, and which pressure class it falls in. This guide covers the main refrigerant families, the pressure classes defined in the regulation, blends and fractionation, oils, and a short note on A2L refrigerants.
- Where to Take the EPA 608 ExamEPA does not run the Section 608 exam itself. It approves certifying organizations, and you test with one of them, in person, online with a remote proctor, or for Type I only, by mail. Here is how the options differ and where to find an approved program.
Common questions
- How many questions are on the EPA 608 exam?
- 25 per section. Every test includes the 25 Core questions plus 25 for each Type you take, so the Universal exam is 100 questions.
- What score do you need to pass the EPA 608?
- 70% in each section, which is 18 out of 25. A Type I test taken in mail-in format needs 84%. Sections are scored separately, so you can pass some and retake others.
- Is the EPA 608 Type I test open book?
- Some programs offer Type I in a mail-in format, which needs 84% to pass and can't be counted toward Universal certification. Types II, III and Universal are closed-book and proctored. See the Type I open-book test.
- Can I take the EPA 608 exam online?
- Yes, through certifying organizations that offer online proctored testing. EPA lists every approved organization; see where to take the EPA 608 exam.
- Does EPA 608 certification expire?
- No. Section 608 technician certification does not expire.
- Are these the real exam questions?
- No. The real questions come from a bank EPA keeps for certifying organizations. These are original questions written from the same rules and the same topic list, so they test the same knowledge.
Unofficial, not affiliated with the EPA or any EPA-approved certifying organization. Questions are original practice written from public EPA material, not real exam questions.
