A refrigerant's critical temperature is below 104 °F. How is an appliance using it classified?
Refrigeration · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Identifying refrigerants, system components and the state of refrigerant in each.
The question
A refrigerant's critical temperature is below 104 °F. How is an appliance using it classified?
- Medium-pressure
- High-pressure
- Very high-pressureCorrect answer
- Low-pressure
Why “Very high-pressure” is correct
The very high-pressure definition covers refrigerants with a critical temperature below 104 °F or a saturation pressure above 355 psia at 104 °F. Above its critical temperature a refrigerant cannot exist as a liquid, so it cannot be rated by saturation pressure there.

Why the other answers are wrong
- Medium-pressure — Medium-pressure is defined by a saturation pressure of 45 to 170 psia.
- High-pressure — High-pressure is defined by a saturation pressure of 170 to 355 psia.
- Low-pressure — Low-pressure refrigerants have saturation pressures below 45 psia.
