A pressure-temperature table lists a saturation pressure of 250 psia. What would a gauge read at that pressure?

Refrigeration · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Identifying refrigerants, system components and the state of refrigerant in each.

The question

A pressure-temperature table lists a saturation pressure of 250 psia. What would a gauge read at that pressure?

  • 235.3 psigCorrect answer
  • 250 psig
  • 264.7 psig
  • 279.4 psig

Why “235.3 psig” is correct

To convert absolute pressure to gauge pressure, subtract 14.7. 250 - 14.7 = 235.3 psig.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • 250 psig — Gauge and absolute pressure are not the same number.
  • 264.7 psig — This adds 14.7 when it should be subtracted.
  • 279.4 psig — This adds 14.7 twice.
