Refrigeration · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Identifying refrigerants, system components and the state of refrigerant in each.
The question
A refrigerant has a liquid-phase saturation pressure of 200 psia at 104 °F. How does 40 CFR 82.152 classify an appliance that uses it?
- Low-pressure
- Medium-pressure
- Very high-pressure
- High-pressureCorrect answer
Why “High-pressure” is correct
A high-pressure appliance uses a refrigerant with a saturation pressure between 170 and 355 psia at 104 °F. 200 psia falls in that range, alongside refrigerants such as R-22 and R-410A.
Source: 40 CFR 82.152
Why the other answers are wrong
- Low-pressure — Low-pressure means below 45 psia at 104 °F.
- Medium-pressure — Medium-pressure covers 45 to 170 psia at 104 °F.
- Very high-pressure — Very high-pressure means above 355 psia, or a critical temperature below 104 °F.
