A suction gauge reads 100 psig. What is that pressure in psia?

Refrigeration · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Identifying refrigerants, system components and the state of refrigerant in each.

The question

A suction gauge reads 100 psig. What is that pressure in psia?

  • 85.3 psia
  • 100 psia
  • 114.7 psiaCorrect answer
  • 129.4 psia

Why “114.7 psia” is correct

Gauges read pressure above the atmosphere, so absolute pressure is gauge pressure plus 14.7 psi at sea level. 100 + 14.7 = 114.7 psia.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • 85.3 psia — This subtracts 14.7 instead of adding it.
  • 100 psia — psig and psia differ by atmospheric pressure, so they are not equal.
  • 129.4 psia — This adds 14.7 twice.
