Where should they look first?
Refrigeration · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Identifying refrigerants, system components and the state of refrigerant in each.
The question
A technician arrives at an unfamiliar packaged unit and needs to know which refrigerant it uses. Where should they look first?
- The color of the suction line insulation
- The unit's nameplateCorrect answer
- The size of the service valves
- The thermostat model
Why “The unit's nameplate” is correct
The nameplate lists the refrigerant the appliance was built for, and usually its charge. Checking it first prevents mixing refrigerants or using the wrong recovery cylinder.

Why the other answers are wrong
- The color of the suction line insulation — Insulation color says nothing about the refrigerant.
- The size of the service valves — Valve size does not identify the refrigerant.
- The thermostat model — The thermostat has no connection to the refrigerant type.
