What happens to the repair deadlines?
Leak repair requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Leak-rate thresholds, repair deadlines, extensions and records.
The question
An owner mothballs a leaking 250-pound R-22 commercial refrigeration system by evacuating it and shutting it down. What happens to the repair deadlines?
- They are suspended until refrigerant is added againCorrect answer
- They are cancelled permanently
- They keep running as normal
- They are extended by exactly one year from the leak date
Why “They are suspended until refrigerant is added again” is correct
Mothballing means evacuating to at least atmospheric pressure and temporarily shutting the appliance down. The repair time frames are suspended while it is mothballed and resume on the day refrigerant is added again.

Why the other answers are wrong
- They are cancelled permanently — The clock is paused, not cancelled; it resumes when refrigerant goes back in.
- They keep running as normal — The deadlines are suspended, not running, during mothballing.
- They are extended by exactly one year from the leak date — No fixed one-year extension comes with mothballing.
