Using the annualizing method, what is the leak rate?
Leak repair requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Leak-rate thresholds, repair deadlines, extensions and records.
The question
A 100-pound R-22 comfort-cooling system needed 10 pounds to return to full charge, and the last addition was 73 days ago. Using the annualizing method, what is the leak rate?
- 10 percent
- 20 percent
- 50 percentCorrect answer
- 73 percent
Why “50 percent” is correct
Divide pounds added by full charge (10 / 100 = 0.1), divide the days since the last addition by 365 (73 / 365 = 0.2), then divide the first number by the second (0.1 / 0.2 = 0.5) and multiply by 100. The result, 50 percent, is far above the 10 percent comfort cooling rate.

Why the other answers are wrong
- 10 percent — 10 percent is only the share of the charge added, not annualized.
- 20 percent — 20 percent is the time fraction, not the leak rate.
- 73 percent — 73 is the number of days, not a percentage.
