The question

The owner of a 300-pound R-22 chiller must calculate the leak rate every time refrigerant is added, except when the addition:

  • is less than 5 pounds
  • is made by the owner's own technician
  • is made in the first month of the calendar year
  • follows a retrofit or is a seasonal varianceCorrect answer

Why “follows a retrofit or is a seasonal variance” is correct

The leak rate must be calculated after every addition unless it is made immediately after a retrofit, at installation of a new appliance, or qualifies as a seasonal variance. No size or staffing exception exists.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • is less than 5 pounds — No minimum amount exempts an addition from the calculation.
  • is made by the owner's own technician — Who does the work does not matter.
  • is made in the first month of the calendar year — The calendar month has nothing to do with it.
