The question

A 200-pound R-22 appliance leaked 260 pounds of refrigerant during one calendar year. What must the owner do?

  • Submit a report to EPA by March 1 of the following yearCorrect answer
  • Retire the appliance within 30 days
  • Notify the state within 10 days
  • Nothing more, as long as each individual leak was repaired

Why “Submit a report to EPA by March 1 of the following year” is correct

An appliance of 50 pounds or more that leaks 125 percent or more of its full charge in a calendar year is a chronic leaker. The owner must report to EPA by March 1 of the next year, describing efforts to find and repair the leaks. Here 260 pounds is 130 percent of the charge.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Retire the appliance within 30 days — Chronic leaking triggers a report, not automatic retirement within 30 days.
  • Notify the state within 10 days — The report goes to EPA, not the state, and is due March 1.
  • Nothing more, as long as each individual leak was repaired — The report is required even if individual leaks were repaired.
