The question

After writing a retirement plan for a leaking 120-pound R-22 chiller, the owner finds the leak rate is now below 10 percent. Within what time of the plan's date must this be established to ask EPA for relief from retiring it?

  • 30 days
  • 90 days
  • 1 year
  • 180 daysCorrect answer

Why “180 days” is correct

The owner may ask EPA for relief from the retrofit or retirement obligation by establishing, within 180 days of the plan's date, that the appliance no longer exceeds the leak rate. The owner must also agree in writing to repair all identified leaks within one year of the plan's date.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • 30 days — 30 days is the time to write the plan, not to seek relief.
  • 90 days — 90 days is not a deadline in this rule.
  • 1 year — One year is the time to complete the plan.
