The question
After recovering R-22 from a 100-pound system for a compressor change, what must the technician do before opening it?
- Verify the required evacuation level was reachedCorrect answer
- Add nitrogen to bring the pressure back above 0 psig
- Have the owner sign a recovery record
- Wait 24 hours for the oil to settle
Why “Verify the required evacuation level was reached” is correct
Section 82.156(a) requires the technician to verify that the applicable evacuation level has been reached in the appliance or the part before it is opened. Watching the gauge for a few minutes after shutting off the machine is part of that check.

Why the other answers are wrong
- Add nitrogen to bring the pressure back above 0 psig — Adding nitrogen is not required before opening a high-pressure appliance and would not confirm recovery.
- Have the owner sign a recovery record — No owner signature is required before opening the system.
- Wait 24 hours for the oil to settle — No waiting period of that kind exists in the rule.
