What does the rule allow?
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Evacuation levels by charge size and equipment date, major repairs, and system-dependent limits.
The question
An R-22 system has service valves that let the technician pump the charge into the receiver and isolate it there. What does the rule allow?
- Venting the small amount left in the open section
- Opening the section without any further checks
- Evacuating only the part being servicedCorrect answer
- Skipping evacuation if the job is under 15 minutes
Why “Evacuating only the part being serviced” is correct
Technicians may evacuate either the whole appliance or just the part to be serviced, if the refrigerant in that part can be isolated to a system receiver. The part being opened must still reach the required level, and that must be verified.

Why the other answers are wrong
- Venting the small amount left in the open section — Venting any refrigerant from the open section is prohibited.
- Opening the section without any further checks — The isolated part still has to be evacuated to the required level and verified.
- Skipping evacuation if the job is under 15 minutes — A short job does not remove the evacuation requirement.
