A 40-pound R-22 system needs refrigerant removed. In which case may system-dependent recovery equipment be used on it?
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Evacuation levels by charge size and equipment date, major repairs, and system-dependent limits.
The question
A 40-pound R-22 system needs refrigerant removed. In which case may system-dependent recovery equipment be used on it?
- When the system's own compressor is still running normally
- When the job is not a major repair
- When the recovery cylinder is chilled
- When it is permanently attached as a pump-out unitCorrect answer
Why “When it is permanently attached as a pump-out unit” is correct
Above 15 pounds, system-dependent equipment is banned unless it is permanently attached to the appliance as a pump-out unit. A working compressor or a non-major job does not create an exception.

Why the other answers are wrong
- When the system's own compressor is still running normally — A working compressor helps system-dependent recovery but does not lift the 15-pound limit.
- When the job is not a major repair — The 15-pound limit applies to all jobs, major or not.
- When the recovery cylinder is chilled — Chilling the cylinder speeds recovery but has nothing to do with the rule.
