Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Evacuation levels by charge size and equipment date, major repairs, and system-dependent limits.
The question
A technician is disposing of a 30-pound R-22 rooftop unit using a recovery machine built in 2018. What is the required evacuation level?
- 0 inches of Hg vacuumCorrect answer
- 10 inches of Hg vacuum
- 4 inches of Hg vacuum
- Recovery of 90 percent of the charge
Why “0 inches of Hg vacuum” is correct
Section 82.156(a) applies the Table 1 levels both before opening and before disposing of an appliance. A high-pressure appliance under 200 pounds must reach 0 inches of Hg vacuum with either age of recovery equipment.
Source: 40 CFR 82.156(a); 40 CFR 82.156(a), Table 1
Why the other answers are wrong
- 10 inches of Hg vacuum — 10 inches applies to high-pressure appliances of 200 pounds or more.
- 4 inches of Hg vacuum — 4 inches is a pre-1993 level for larger high-pressure or for medium-pressure appliances.
- Recovery of 90 percent of the charge — Percentage recovery targets apply to small appliances under 82.156(b), not a 30-pound rooftop unit.
