What evacuation level must be reached?

Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Evacuation levels by charge size and equipment date, major repairs, and system-dependent limits.

The question

An R-500 system with a 250-pound charge is being retired. The recovery machine was made in 1992. What evacuation level must be reached?

  • 15 inches of Hg vacuum
  • 10 inches of Hg vacuum
  • 4 inches of Hg vacuumCorrect answer
  • 0 inches of Hg vacuum

Why “4 inches of Hg vacuum” is correct

R-500 is listed as a medium-pressure refrigerant. A medium-pressure appliance of 200 pounds or more needs 15 inches with newer equipment, but only 4 inches with equipment made before November 15, 1993. Disposal uses the same table.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • 15 inches of Hg vacuum — 15 inches would apply if the recovery machine were made on or after November 15, 1993.
  • 10 inches of Hg vacuum — 10 inches is the newer-equipment level for medium-pressure appliances under 200 pounds.
  • 0 inches of Hg vacuum — 0 inches is not a medium-pressure level in Table 1.
