Using recovery equipment manufactured in 2021, what evacuation level is required before a major repair?
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Evacuation levels by charge size and equipment date, major repairs, and system-dependent limits.
The question
A comfort-cooling chiller contains 400 pounds of R-134a. Using recovery equipment manufactured in 2021, what evacuation level is required before a major repair?
- 10 inches of Hg vacuum
- 15 inches of Hg vacuumCorrect answer
- 4 inches of Hg vacuum
- 25 mm Hg absolute
Why “15 inches of Hg vacuum” is correct
R-134a is medium-pressure, and this chiller holds 200 pounds or more. That row requires 15 inches of Hg vacuum with equipment made on or after November 15, 1993, the deepest level for any medium- or high-pressure appliance.

Why the other answers are wrong
- 10 inches of Hg vacuum — 10 inches is the medium-pressure level when the charge is under 200 pounds.
- 4 inches of Hg vacuum — 4 inches applies only with recovery equipment made before November 15, 1993.
- 25 mm Hg absolute — 25 mm Hg absolute is for low-pressure appliances; R-134a is medium-pressure.
