What evacuation level does Table 1 require?
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Evacuation levels by charge size and equipment date, major repairs, and system-dependent limits.
The question
An older R-12 system with an 80-pound charge is being opened to replace its condenser. The recovery unit was manufactured in 1989. What evacuation level does Table 1 require?
- 4 inches of Hg vacuumCorrect answer
- 10 inches of Hg vacuum
- 0 inches of Hg vacuum
- 15 inches of Hg vacuum
Why “4 inches of Hg vacuum” is correct
R-12 is a medium-pressure refrigerant. With recovery equipment made before November 15, 1993, every medium-pressure row in Table 1 is 4 inches of Hg vacuum, regardless of charge size.

Why the other answers are wrong
- 10 inches of Hg vacuum — 10 inches is the requirement for a medium-pressure appliance under 200 pounds with newer equipment.
- 0 inches of Hg vacuum — 0 inches is for very high-pressure and small high-pressure appliances, not medium-pressure.
- 15 inches of Hg vacuum — 15 inches is for medium-pressure appliances of 200 pounds or more with newer equipment.
