Using recovery equipment made in 2010, what evacuation level is required before the compressor is removed?

Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Evacuation levels by charge size and equipment date, major repairs, and system-dependent limits.

The question

A walk-in cooler system holds 120 pounds of R-134a. Using recovery equipment made in 2010, what evacuation level is required before the compressor is removed?

  • 0 inches of Hg vacuum
  • 4 inches of Hg vacuum
  • 15 inches of Hg vacuum
  • 10 inches of Hg vacuumCorrect answer

Why “10 inches of Hg vacuum” is correct

R-134a is a medium-pressure refrigerant. A medium-pressure appliance under 200 pounds must be evacuated to 10 inches of Hg vacuum with equipment made on or after November 15, 1993, and to 4 inches with older equipment.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • 0 inches of Hg vacuum — 0 inches is the level for high-pressure appliances under 200 pounds, but R-134a is medium-pressure.
  • 4 inches of Hg vacuum — 4 inches is this row's requirement only with equipment made before November 15, 1993.
  • 15 inches of Hg vacuum — 15 inches applies when the medium-pressure charge is 200 pounds or more.
