The question
A technician uses a recovery machine built in 1992 on an R-22 system with a 300-pound charge before replacing its evaporator. What level must be reached?
- 10 inches of Hg vacuum
- 0 inches of Hg vacuum
- 4 inches of Hg vacuumCorrect answer
- 15 inches of Hg vacuum
Why “4 inches of Hg vacuum” is correct
For a high-pressure appliance of 200 pounds or more, Table 1 requires 4 inches of Hg vacuum with recovery equipment made before November 15, 1993. The same appliance would need 10 inches with newer equipment.
Source: 40 CFR 82.156(a), Table 1
Why the other answers are wrong
- 10 inches of Hg vacuum — 10 inches is the requirement for this row with equipment made on or after November 15, 1993.
- 0 inches of Hg vacuum — 0 inches applies to high-pressure appliances with less than 200 pounds.
- 15 inches of Hg vacuum — 15 inches is a medium-pressure requirement for newer equipment.
