Using recovery equipment manufactured in 2015, what evacuation level is required before a major repair?
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Evacuation levels by charge size and equipment date, major repairs, and system-dependent limits.
The question
A process chiller holds 250 pounds of R-407C. Using recovery equipment manufactured in 2015, what evacuation level is required before a major repair?
- 0 inches of Hg vacuum
- 10 inches of Hg vacuumCorrect answer
- 4 inches of Hg vacuum
- 15 inches of Hg vacuum
Why “10 inches of Hg vacuum” is correct
R-407C is a high-pressure refrigerant. A high-pressure appliance with a full charge of 200 pounds or more must be pulled to 10 inches of Hg vacuum with equipment made on or after November 15, 1993, or 4 inches with older equipment.

Why the other answers are wrong
- 0 inches of Hg vacuum — 0 inches applies to high-pressure appliances under 200 pounds, and this one holds 250.
- 4 inches of Hg vacuum — 4 inches is the level for this row only with recovery equipment made before November 15, 1993.
- 15 inches of Hg vacuum — 15 inches is for medium-pressure appliances of 200 pounds or more, and R-407C is high-pressure.
