What evacuation level does Table 1 require?
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Evacuation levels by charge size and equipment date, major repairs, and system-dependent limits.
The question
An appliance charged with R-508B is being sent for disposal. The only recovery machine on site was manufactured in 1991. What evacuation level does Table 1 require?
- 4 inches of Hg vacuum
- 0 inches of Hg vacuumCorrect answer
- 10 inches of Hg vacuum
- 25 mm Hg absolute
Why “0 inches of Hg vacuum” is correct
Disposal triggers the same Table 1 levels as opening the appliance. R-508B is a very high-pressure refrigerant, and that row is 0 inches of Hg vacuum for both pre- and post-November 15, 1993 equipment.

Why the other answers are wrong
- 4 inches of Hg vacuum — No very high-pressure row allows or requires 4 inches; the older-equipment column still reads 0.
- 10 inches of Hg vacuum — 10 inches applies to certain medium- and high-pressure appliances with newer equipment.
- 25 mm Hg absolute — 25 mm Hg absolute is the level for low-pressure appliances such as R-123 chillers.
