Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Evacuation levels by charge size and equipment date, major repairs, and system-dependent limits.
The question
A packaged rooftop unit holds 150 pounds of R-22. Using recovery equipment made after November 15, 1993, to what level must it be evacuated before the condenser coil is replaced?
- 4 inches of Hg vacuum
- 10 inches of Hg vacuum
- 0 inches of Hg vacuumCorrect answer
- 15 inches of Hg vacuum
Why “0 inches of Hg vacuum” is correct
R-22 is a high-pressure refrigerant, and a high-pressure appliance with a full charge under 200 pounds must be evacuated to 0 inches of Hg vacuum. That level is the same with older and newer recovery equipment.

Why the other answers are wrong
- 4 inches of Hg vacuum — 4 inches is the pre-1993 level for high-pressure appliances of 200 pounds or more.
- 10 inches of Hg vacuum — 10 inches applies once the high-pressure charge reaches 200 pounds, with newer equipment.
- 15 inches of Hg vacuum — 15 inches is reserved for medium-pressure appliances of 200 pounds or more.
