The small-appliance definition and the recovery levels required.
The question
A commercial reach-in refrigerator is factory-sealed with 3 pounds of refrigerant. How is it classed?
- As a small applianceCorrect answer
- As a Type II appliance, because it is commercial
- As an exempt appliance, because it is under 5 pounds
- As a low-pressure appliance, because it holds so little
Why “As a small appliance” is correct
The small-appliance definition covers refrigerators and freezers designed for home, commercial or consumer use, so long as they are factory-made, charged and sealed with 5 pounds or less. A 3-pound sealed reach-in qualifies.

Why the other answers are wrong
- As a Type II appliance, because it is commercial — Commercial use does not move it out of the definition, which names refrigerators "designed for home, commercial, or consumer use"; Type II excludes small appliances.
- As an exempt appliance, because it is under 5 pounds — Small appliances are covered, not exempt.
- As a low-pressure appliance, because it holds so little — Pressure class depends on the refrigerant, not the charge size.
