Which certification covers both jobs?
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type I. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
The small-appliance definition and the recovery levels required.
The question
A technician services a 1.8-pound vending machine and also a 30-pound rooftop unit. Which certification covers both jobs?
- Type I alone, because both use high-pressure refrigerant
- Type I plus Type II, or UniversalCorrect answer
- Type II alone, because it covers all high-pressure equipment
- Type III, because it covers all commercial equipment
Why “Type I plus Type II, or Universal” is correct
Type I covers small appliances, and Type II covers medium-, high- and very high-pressure appliances other than small appliances. A technician working on both needs both types, or Universal, which covers all appliances.

Why the other answers are wrong
- Type I alone, because both use high-pressure refrigerant — Type I covers only small appliances; the 30-pound unit is outside that.
- Type II alone, because it covers all high-pressure equipment — Type II covers appliances except small appliances, so it does not cover the vending machine.
- Type III, because it covers all commercial equipment — Type III covers low-pressure appliances, not these units.
