Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type I. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
The small-appliance definition and the recovery levels required.
The question
A chest freezer holds 1.5 pounds of refrigerant and its compressor will not run. Using recovery equipment made in 2016, how much must be recovered at minimum?
- 1.35 pounds
- 1.2 poundsCorrect answer
- 1.5 pounds
- 1.05 pounds
Why “1.2 pounds” is correct
With equipment made on or after November 15, 1993 and a compressor that is not functioning, the level is 80 percent, and 80 percent of 1.5 pounds is 1.2 pounds. The 4-inch vacuum option is also available.

Why the other answers are wrong
- 1.35 pounds — That is 90 percent, which applies only when the compressor is functioning.
- 1.5 pounds — The rule does not require the full charge.
- 1.05 pounds — That is only 70 percent, below the required level.
