Using 2012 recovery equipment with the compressor running, how much must the technician recover at minimum?
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type I. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
The small-appliance definition and the recovery levels required.
The question
A household refrigerator's nameplate lists a charge of 10 ounces. Using 2012 recovery equipment with the compressor running, how much must the technician recover at minimum?
- 8 ounces
- 10 ounces
- 9 ouncesCorrect answer
- 7 ounces
Why “9 ounces” is correct
Newer equipment on an appliance with a working compressor must recover 90 percent of the charge, and 90 percent of 10 ounces is 9 ounces. Reaching 4 inches of Hg vacuum would also satisfy the rule.
Source: 40 CFR 82.156(b)
Why the other answers are wrong
- 8 ounces — Eight ounces is 80 percent, the level for a non-working compressor or older equipment.
- 10 ounces — The rule asks for 90 percent, not the full charge.
- 7 ounces — Seven ounces is only 70 percent, below any small-appliance level.
