The question
Instead of meeting a percentage, to what level may a technician evacuate a small appliance to satisfy the recovery requirement?
- 4 inches of Hg vacuumCorrect answer
- 10 inches of Hg vacuum
- 25 mm Hg absolute
- 0 psig
Why “4 inches of Hg vacuum” is correct
Section 82.156(b)(3) lets a technician meet the small-appliance requirement by evacuating the appliance to four inches of mercury vacuum. It is an alternative to the 80 or 90 percent figures.

Why the other answers are wrong
- 10 inches of Hg vacuum — Ten inches applies to some larger high- and medium-pressure appliances in Table 1, not to small appliances.
- 25 mm Hg absolute — That level is for low-pressure appliances.
- 0 psig — Zero psig is the limit for leaking components, not the small-appliance evacuation option.
