What share of the refrigerant must be recovered?

Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type I. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

The small-appliance definition and the recovery levels required.

The question

A technician's recovery unit was manufactured in 1991. The vending machine being serviced has a working compressor. What share of the refrigerant must be recovered?

  • 90 percent
  • 95 percent
  • 80 percentCorrect answer
  • 70 percent

Why “80 percent” is correct

For recovery equipment manufactured before November 15, 1993, 82.156(b)(1) sets 80 percent regardless of the compressor. The 90 percent level for a working compressor applies only to newer equipment.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • 90 percent — The 90 percent level applies only to equipment made on or after November 15, 1993.
  • 95 percent — No small-appliance recovery level is set at 95 percent.
  • 70 percent — Seventy percent is the closed-book passing score, not a recovery level.
