What share of the refrigerant must be recovered?
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type I. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
The small-appliance definition and the recovery levels required.
The question
A technician uses recovery equipment built in 2018 on a window air conditioner whose compressor has failed. What share of the refrigerant must be recovered?
- 90 percent
- 80 percentCorrect answer
- 70 percent
- 50 percent
Why “80 percent” is correct
For equipment made on or after November 15, 1993, the level drops to 80 percent when the appliance compressor is not functioning. Without a running compressor, refrigerant is harder to move out of the system.

Why the other answers are wrong
- 90 percent — Ninety percent applies only when the appliance compressor is functioning.
- 70 percent — Seventy percent is a test passing score, not a recovery level.
- 50 percent — No small-appliance recovery level is set that low.
