What share of the refrigerant must be recovered?
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type I. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
The small-appliance definition and the recovery levels required.
The question
A technician uses recovery equipment built in 2012 on a household refrigerator whose compressor runs. What share of the refrigerant must be recovered?
- 80 percent
- 90 percentCorrect answer
- 100 percent
- 85 percent
Why “90 percent” is correct
With equipment made on or after November 15, 1993, the level is 90 percent when the appliance compressor is functioning. A working compressor helps push refrigerant out, so EPA expects more of it to be recovered.

Why the other answers are wrong
- 80 percent — Eighty percent applies to newer equipment only when the appliance compressor is not working.
- 100 percent — The regulation does not require every last bit of refrigerant from a small appliance.
- 85 percent — No small-appliance recovery level is set at 85 percent.
