Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type I. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
The small-appliance definition and the recovery levels required.
The question
Using recovery equipment manufactured before November 15, 1993, what share of the refrigerant must a technician recover from a small appliance?
- 90 percent
- 80 percentCorrect answer
- 70 percent
- 95 percent
Why “80 percent” is correct
Under 82.156(b)(1), older recovery equipment must recover 80 percent of the refrigerant in the small appliance. The compressor's condition does not change that figure for pre-1993 equipment.

Why the other answers are wrong
- 90 percent — Ninety percent applies only to newer equipment when the appliance compressor is working.
- 70 percent — Seventy percent is the passing score for closed-book tests, not a recovery level.
- 95 percent — No small-appliance recovery level is set at 95 percent.
