The small-appliance definition and the recovery levels required.
The question
Which statement about the 4-inch vacuum option for small appliances is correct?
- It applies regardless of equipment age or compressor conditionCorrect answer
- It may be used only with equipment made before November 15, 1993
- It may be used only when the appliance compressor works
- It may be used only at disposal, never during service
Why “It applies regardless of equipment age or compressor condition” is correct
Section 82.156(b) gives three alternatives joined by "or": 80 percent with old equipment, 90 or 80 percent with newer equipment depending on the compressor, or evacuation to four inches of mercury vacuum. The vacuum option is not tied to equipment age or compressor condition.

Why the other answers are wrong
- It may be used only with equipment made before November 15, 1993 — The rule lists the 4-inch option as a separate choice open to all certified recovery equipment, old or new.
- It may be used only when the appliance compressor works — The compressor's condition matters for the percentage levels, not for the 4-inch option.
- It may be used only at disposal, never during service — The small-appliance levels in 82.156(b) apply both before opening and at disposal.
