An older centrifugal chiller is charged with R-11. What type of refrigerant is R-11?

Environmental impacts · EPA 608 Core. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

How CFCs and HCFCs destroy stratospheric ozone, and what that does to health and the environment.

The question

An older centrifugal chiller is charged with R-11. What type of refrigerant is R-11?

  • HFC
  • HCFC
  • HFO
  • CFCCorrect answer

Why “CFC” is correct

R-11 is a chlorofluorocarbon, and it is the reference refrigerant for ozone depletion potential with an ODP of 1.0. Its replacement in many chillers, R-123, is an HCFC.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • HFC — HFCs contain no chlorine; R-11 does.
  • HCFC — R-123, not R-11, is the HCFC used in many newer low-pressure chillers.
  • HFO — HFOs are recent low-GWP refrigerants, not R-11.
