Shipping · EPA 608 Core. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Labels and DOT classification for refrigerant cylinders.
The question
A technician has a cylinder holding a mix of R-22 and R-404A. How should it be labeled before shipment to a reclaimer?
- With no refrigerant name, only the DOT tag
- As R-22, since R-22 was put in first
- As R-404A, since it is the larger amount
- As mixed refrigerant, naming what it containsCorrect answer
Why “As mixed refrigerant, naming what it contains” is correct
Labels must correctly identify what is in the cylinder. A mixture must be identified as such so the reclaimer can handle it properly; mixed refrigerant may not be reclaimable and may have to be destroyed.

Why the other answers are wrong
- With no refrigerant name, only the DOT tag — Refrigerant identification is required in addition to the DOT tag.
- As R-22, since R-22 was put in first — Labeling a mixture as one refrigerant is inaccurate and can contaminate other product.
- As R-404A, since it is the larger amount — Labeling by the larger amount still misstates the contents.
