The question

A contractor recovers 20 pounds of R-22 from a customer's system. Before selling it to a different owner, what must happen to it?

  • It must be reclaimed by an EPA-certified reclaimerCorrect answer
  • It must be filtered through a recycling machine
  • It must be stored for at least 30 days
  • It must be mixed with fresh R-22 first

Why “It must be reclaimed by an EPA-certified reclaimer” is correct

Under 40 CFR 82.154(d), used refrigerant may not be sold to a new owner unless it has been reclaimed by a reclaimer certified under 82.164 (with narrow exceptions such as transfers within the same company). Recycling alone is not enough.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • It must be filtered through a recycling machine — Recycled refrigerant may go back only into equipment of the same owner.
  • It must be stored for at least 30 days — Storage time does not change the reclamation requirement.
  • It must be mixed with fresh R-22 first — Mixing with new refrigerant does not make used refrigerant legal to sell.
