What does the rule require first?

Section 608 regulations · EPA 608 Core. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Pressure classes, recovery equipment certification, AHRI 700, the sales restriction and the venting ban.

The question

Refrigerant recovered from a customer's walk-in cooler is to be charged into another cooler owned by the same customer. What does the rule require first?

  • It must be tested by a laboratory for acid
  • It must be reclaimed to AHRI 700-2016
  • Nothing more; it may go into the same owner's equipmentCorrect answer
  • It must be approved in writing by the EPA regional office

Why “Nothing more; it may go into the same owner's equipment” is correct

40 CFR 82.156(h) lets recovered refrigerant be returned to the appliance it came from or put into another appliance owned by the same person without being recycled or reclaimed (MVACs and MVAC-like appliances excepted). Good practice is still to recycle refrigerant that may be dirty.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • It must be tested by a laboratory for acid — Laboratory testing is part of reclamation, which is not required here.
  • It must be reclaimed to AHRI 700-2016 — Reclamation is required when the refrigerant changes ownership.
  • It must be approved in writing by the EPA regional office — EPA approval is not needed to reuse refrigerant within one owner.
