The question
How long must the owner of a 300-pound R-123 chiller keep its service and leak inspection records?
- At least three yearsCorrect answer
- At least one year
- At least five years
- Until the next chiller overhaul
Why “At least three years” is correct
40 CFR 82.157(l) requires that leak repair records be kept for at least three years, in paper or electronic form, unless another period is stated. Full-charge records are kept until three years after the appliance is retired.
Source: 40 CFR 82.157(l)
Why the other answers are wrong
- At least one year — One year is too short; the rule says three years.
- At least five years — Five years is longer than the general Part 82 requirement.
- Until the next chiller overhaul — Retention is set in years, not by service events.
