Allowable annual leak rates for low-pressure appliances.

The question

After leaks on an R-11 chiller are repaired, when are they presumed repaired under 40 CFR 82.157(d)?

  • As soon as the initial verification test passes
  • After 30 days of normal operation
  • If no more refrigerant is added for 12 monthsCorrect answer
  • When purge run time returns to normal

Why “If no more refrigerant is added for 12 months” is correct

The rule says leaks will be presumed repaired if there is no further refrigerant addition for 12 months after the repair, or if the required leak inspections find no leaks. Otherwise the next leak rate calculation must confirm the rate is below the trigger.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • As soon as the initial verification test passes — Passing the initial test is required, but it is not the presumption in the rule.
  • After 30 days of normal operation — 30 days is the repair deadline, not the presumption period.
  • When purge run time returns to normal — Purge run time is a useful sign but is not the legal test.
