Leak repair requirements · EPA 608 Type III. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Allowable annual leak rates for low-pressure appliances.

The question

A leak repair on an R-11 chiller required evacuating the machine. When must the initial verification test be performed?

  • After the full charge has been restored
  • Before any refrigerant is added backCorrect answer
  • Within one year of the repair
  • Only after the follow-up test passes

Why “Before any refrigerant is added back” is correct

When a repair requires evacuating the appliance or part of it, 40 CFR 82.157(e)(1)(ii) says the initial verification test must be done before adding any refrigerant. That proves the repaired leaks hold before charge goes back in.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • After the full charge has been restored — For evacuated repairs the test comes before charging, not after.
  • Within one year of the repair — The initial test is due within the 30-day (or 120-day) repair window.
  • Only after the follow-up test passes — The initial test comes first; the follow-up test comes after it.
