if it leaks what share of its full charge in one calendar year?

Leak detection · EPA 608 Type III. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Pressurizing low-pressure systems for leak tests, signs of leaks, inspections and reports.

The question

An R-11 chiller with 500 pounds of refrigerant is a "chronically leaking appliance" if it leaks what share of its full charge in one calendar year?

  • 100 percent or more
  • 50 percent or more
  • 125 percent or moreCorrect answer
  • 30 percent or more

Why “125 percent or more” is correct

Under 40 CFR 82.157(j), owners of appliances with 50 pounds or more of refrigerant that leak 125 percent or more of the full charge in a calendar year must report to EPA. For this chiller that means losing 625 pounds or more in a year.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • 100 percent or more — Losing the whole charge once is serious, but the reporting trigger is 125 percent.
  • 50 percent or more — 50 percent is far below the chronic leaker threshold.
  • 30 percent or more — 30 percent is the industrial process refrigeration leak rate, not the chronic leaker trigger.
