Which of these jobs on an R-11 chiller is a major repair under 40 CFR 82.152?
Recovery requirements · EPA 608 Type III. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Evacuation levels for low-pressure appliances, and major versus non-major repairs.
The question
Which of these jobs on an R-11 chiller is a major repair under 40 CFR 82.152?
- Tightening the bolts on a pump flange
- Removing the evaporator for replacementCorrect answer
- Replacing a sight glass with a 2-square-inch opening for 10 minutes
- Changing a gauge on a quarter-inch access port
Why “Removing the evaporator for replacement” is correct
A major repair is one that removes the compressor, condenser, evaporator or an auxiliary heat exchange coil, or that uncovers more than 4 square inches of flow area for more than 15 minutes. Removing the evaporator meets the first test outright.

Why the other answers are wrong
- Tightening the bolts on a pump flange — Tightening bolts does not open the refrigerant circuit, so it is not a repair under the evacuation rules at all.
- Replacing a sight glass with a 2-square-inch opening for 10 minutes — This opening is under 4 square inches and under 15 minutes, so the repair is not major.
- Changing a gauge on a quarter-inch access port — A small, brief opening like this does not meet either test for a major repair.
