A refrigerant has a saturation pressure of 400 psia at 104 °F. How is an appliance using it classified?
Refrigeration · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Identifying refrigerants, system components and the state of refrigerant in each.
The question
A refrigerant has a saturation pressure of 400 psia at 104 °F. How is an appliance using it classified?
- Medium-pressure
- High-pressure
- Very high-pressureCorrect answer
- Low-pressure
Why “Very high-pressure” is correct
Very high-pressure appliances use a refrigerant with a saturation pressure above 355 psia at 104 °F, or a critical temperature below 104 °F. 400 psia is above the high-pressure ceiling of 355 psia.
Source: 40 CFR 82.152
Why the other answers are wrong
- Medium-pressure — Medium-pressure tops out at 170 psia.
- High-pressure — High-pressure tops out at 355 psia.
- Low-pressure — Low-pressure is below 45 psia.
