Leak-rate thresholds, repair deadlines, extensions and records.

The question

The owner of a leaking 300-pound R-22 commercial system will retire it and install a new system that uses a refrigerant exempt under 40 CFR 82.154(a). How long is automatically allowed to retire the old appliance?

  • 12 months
  • 18 monthsCorrect answer
  • 24 months
  • 30 months

Why “18 months” is correct

Owners of any appliance type are automatically allowed 18 months to retire an appliance if the replacement uses a substitute refrigerant exempted under 82.154(a), such as certain natural refrigerants. Otherwise the plan schedule is one year.

  • 30 months — 30 months is not a period named in this rule.
