What leaves the metering device in an operating R-22 system?

Refrigeration · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.

Identifying refrigerants, system components and the state of refrigerant in each.

The question

What leaves the metering device in an operating R-22 system?

  • High-pressure liquid
  • High-pressure vapor
  • Low-pressure superheated vapor, the same as the suction line
  • A low-pressure mix of liquid and vaporCorrect answer

Why “A low-pressure mix of liquid and vapor” is correct

The metering device drops the pressure of the high-pressure liquid. Some of it flashes to vapor, so a cold, low-pressure mix of liquid and vapor enters the evaporator.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • High-pressure liquid — High-pressure liquid enters the metering device; it does not leave it.
  • High-pressure vapor — High-pressure vapor is in the discharge line.
  • Low-pressure superheated vapor, the same as the suction line — Superheated low-pressure vapor leaves the evaporator.
