In the condenser of an R-22 system, the refrigerant:
Refrigeration · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Identifying refrigerants, system components and the state of refrigerant in each.
The question
In the condenser of an R-22 system, the refrigerant:
- boils from liquid to vapor at low pressure as it absorbs heat
- gives up heat and changes from high-pressure vapor to liquidCorrect answer
- is throttled to a lower pressure
- stays as low-pressure vapor
Why “gives up heat and changes from high-pressure vapor to liquid” is correct
Hot, high-pressure vapor from the compressor enters the condenser and rejects heat. It condenses into high-pressure liquid, which may be slightly subcooled when it leaves.

Why the other answers are wrong
- boils from liquid to vapor at low pressure as it absorbs heat — Boiling at low pressure happens in the evaporator.
- is throttled to a lower pressure — Throttling happens at the metering device.
- stays as low-pressure vapor — Low-pressure vapor belongs in the suction line.
