What does this most likely point to?
Leak detection · EPA 608 Type II. The correct answer, and the reasoning behind it.
Signs of leaks in high-pressure systems and leak testing before charging.
The question
An R-410A split system is cooling poorly, and the technician measures excessive superheat at the evaporator outlet. What does this most likely point to?
- An overcharge of refrigerant
- A dirty condenser coil
- A leak that has left it underchargedCorrect answer
- Too much airflow over the condenser
Why “A leak that has left it undercharged” is correct
EPA lists excessive superheat as a sign of leakage in high-pressure systems. With too little refrigerant, the liquid boils off early in the evaporator and the vapor keeps picking up heat, so superheat climbs.

Why the other answers are wrong
- An overcharge of refrigerant — An overcharge tends to lower superheat, not raise it.
- A dirty condenser coil — A dirty condenser mainly raises head pressure; it is not the classic sign of a leak.
- Too much airflow over the condenser — Extra condenser airflow does not cause high evaporator superheat.
