Leak-rate thresholds, repair deadlines, extensions and records.

The question

The owner of a 250-pound R-22 chiller needs more than 30 days to finish repairs because parts are back-ordered. By when must the extension request reach EPA?

  • Within 30 days of the appliance exceeding the leak rateCorrect answer
  • Within 6 months of the leak
  • Before the next scheduled annual leak inspection of the system
  • By March 1 of the following year

Why “Within 30 days of the appliance exceeding the leak rate” is correct

An extension request must be sent to EPA within 30 days, or 120 days if a process shutdown is required, of the appliance exceeding the trigger rate. The owner must also document all repair efforts and the reason more time is needed.

Why the other answers are wrong

  • Within 6 months of the leak — Six months is far beyond the window the rule allows.
  • Before the next scheduled annual leak inspection of the system — Inspection schedules do not set the extension deadline.
  • By March 1 of the following year — March 1 is the deadline for chronic leaker reports.
